Description

About Faustino I Gran Reserva 75 Aniversario

Founded in 1861 by the Martínez Zabala family, Bodegas Faustino stands as an enduring monument of Rioja winemaking. Its iconic Faustino I Gran Reserva is among the most recognized and exported Rioja wines worldwide, famous for its signature frosted glass bottle, protective golden mesh, and the portrait of Nicolaes van Bambeeck painted by Rembrandt.

The 75 Aniversario Special Edition honors a milestone in the history of this legendary cuvée. It is crafted from the estate’s oldest bush vines (40–60 years old) located in Rioja Alavesa at an altitude of approximately 600 meters. The poor clay-limestone soils and cooling Atlantic breezes foster optimal phenolic ripeness alongside elevated natural acidity. Predominantly Tempranillo, the blend is complemented by Graciano and Mazuelo to contribute vibrant spine and aging structure before undergoing extended aging in selected oak barriques and bottle cellars.

Climate & Overall Wine Profile

  • Colour: Bright, deep ruby with luminous garnet highlights and delicate tawny rim variations.

  • Aroma: Expressive and noble bouquet featuring dark cherries, dried cranberries, sweet vanilla bean, cedarwood, cigar tobacco, cured leather, and delicate balsamic spice.

  • Palate: Stately and velvety smooth. Seamlessly integrated, melted tannins support a medium-to-full body with effortless fluidity. Vibrant acidity keeps the palate agile, leading to an enduring, savory finish marked by tertiary spice, cocoa, and dried dark berries.

Tasting notes

2014

Deep ruby core with shimmering garnet highlights and a soft brick-tawny rim. The aromatics are expansive and noble, displaying red and dark cherries, wild plum, dried cranberries, sweet vanilla bean, cedarwood, cigar tobacco, cured leather, and delicate balsamic spice. Stately and velvety smooth on entry, supported by melted, seamless tannins and vibrant Rioja Alavesa acidity that keeps the medium-to-full body remarkably agile, leading to an enduring, savory finish marked by tertiary spice, cocoa, and dried dark berries.

2012

A benchmark and concentrated vintage showing classic Gran Reserva sophistication. The nose displays stewed plums, blackberry compote, damp forest floor, dried tea leaves, nutmeg, and polished French-American oak spices. The palate is fleshy and deeply harmonious, featuring sweet, fully resolved tannins and an uplift of savory acidity, culminating in an aristocratic, persistent finish laden with dark chocolate and pipe tobacco.

2011

Muscular, structured, and profoundly expressive. Generous ripe black cherries, dark currants, and balsamic herbs framed by sweet toasted wood, clove, and fine leather. Broad and commanding on the palate with substantial structural depth and fine-grained, satiny tannins, finishing exceptionally long with savory complexity and echoes of dried fruit.

2009

Warm, generous, and opulent. Opens with baked black plums, dried figs, licorice, and espresso bean over a background of sweet cedar and roasted spices. The palate is broad, enveloping, and seamless, showing sweet melted tannins and a warm, decadent finish accented by cocoa powder and tertiary balsamic warmth.

2008

Cool, Atlantic-influenced vintage defined by freshness, precision, and linear elegance. The bouquet features dried cherries, wild forest strawberries, pipe tobacco, and cedar shavings. Chiseled and energetic on the palate with refined, lace-like tannins and brilliant natural acidity, delivering a focused, savory, and mineral-driven finish.
