Valdecuriel Reserva 2016

Volume: 75 cl.

92–93 Points - Guía Peñín / James Suckling

Tasting Profile: Deep garnet-red with bright ruby glints. The nose is complex and aristocratic, revealing ripe blackberries, dark plums, and black cherries interlocked with noble French oak spices, cedar, vanilla, cigar box, fine cured leather, and chalky minerality. On the palate, it is full-bodied, structured, and remarkably polished. Firm yet velvety tannins provide a seamless architecture, countered by altitude-driven acidity that maintains energy and lift throughout. The finish is extensive and savory, echoing dark cocoa and toasted spices.

Description

About Valdecuriel Reserva

Bodegas Valdecuriel is situated in Curiel de Duero, in the heart of the D.O. Ribera del Duero. The vineyards are perched on steep hillsides at extreme altitudes between 850 and 900 meters above sea level—among the highest plantings in the entire region. The poor, chalky limestone and white clay soils impart distinct mineral tension and vibrant natural acidity.

The 2016 harvest is widely recognized as a benchmark classic vintage across northern Spain. Significant diurnal temperature shifts enabled the Tempranillo fruit to reach peak phenolic ripeness while retaining essential coolness and freshness. An extensive 24-month elevage in selected French oak barriques integrates tertiary complexity while letting the purity of high-altitude fruit shine through.

2015

A warm, generous vintage offering optimal phenolic ripeness. It opens with ripe black fruit compote, roasted plums, sweet spices, cinnamon, cocoa, and toasted pastry. The palate is broad, fleshy, and hedonistic, framed by sweet, resolved tannins and balanced warmth, concluding in a persistent finish filled with roasted nuts and vanilla oak.

2014

A classic vintage emphasizing freshness and linear tension. Aromas of red and black wild cherries, forest floor, cedarwood, balsamic herbs, and dried tea leaves dominate. The palate is fluid, energetic, and poised, supported by fine-grained tannins and vibrant limestone acidity, leading into a crisp, savory, and mineral finish.

2012

A concentrated and savory vintage displaying tertiary elegance. Unfolds notes of dried figs, prunes, worn leather, tobacco box, and dark espresso. On the palate, tannins are thoroughly resolved and velvety, displaying warmth, harmonious depth, and a lingering finish marked by dried fruit and noble roasted wood.

2011

An exceptional year in Ribera del Duero with muscular depth. Layered aromas of cassis, black licorice, bitter chocolate, and toasted French oak. The palate is commanding, dense, and structured with powerful, chiseled tannins and profound balance, finishing with persistent savory complexity.
